Territory between Lazio and Abruzzo
The Turano Valley, located between the Carseolano area (Carsoli, AQ) and the Reatino area (Rieti, RI), is an important historical transit area. It connects two Italian regions via ancient consular roads: the Via Salaria and the Via Tiburtina Valeria. Today, this valley is part of the VIII Comunità Montana del Turano, comprising several autonomous municipalities that offer a rich variety of cultural and naturalistic experiences.
Since ancient times, the Turano Valley has served as a border region between populations of various civilisations, playing a critical strategic role. On one side lay the communities along the Tiber River, while on the other resided those who settled in the areas that comprise modern-day Abruzzo and Lazio. The valley is home to caves, prehistoric shelters, and significant archaeological and historical sites that present opportunities for further research.
Ancient migrations shaped the valley’s population, with waves of Indo-European peoples, including the Latins, Falisci, Sabines, Equi and Marsi. These people, many of whom practised transhumance, settled in the valley, contributing to its rich history. The ancient Turano River (known as Tolenus) played a crucial role in defining the natural boundaries between the lands of the Sabines and the Equi, reinforcing its historical and geographical importance.
