Castel di Tora, one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, is surrounded by centuries-old
woods, gorges, streams and lakes. Located on the shores of the artificial lake of
Turano, the village offers one of the most fascinating views in the region, with Monte
Navegna dominating the surrounding landscape. The landscape of Castel di Tora is
a real feast for the eyes, with fresh air and the scents of broom, thyme and centuries-
old chestnut trees. The beauty of Lazio’s nature is reflected in the blue waters of the
lake and the mountain peaks surrounding it, while the flight of buzzards enchants
visitors.
The historic centre of Castel di Tora climbs up a hill, dominated by an ancient
medieval castle. The architecture of the village, consisting of exposed stone houses with wooden roofs and brick tiles, still retains the authenticity and charm of typical medieval Sabina dwellings. Strolling through the characteristic cobblestone alleys, visitors can admire ancient portals, stairways, hidden passages, caves and cellars carved into the rock. Remains of Roman columns and Latin inscriptions on the church’s perimeter walls tell of the village’s long history.
The romantic and scenic little belvedere square provides an enchanting view of the lake, while the pentagonal tower, the only one of the medieval walls still preserved, captivates tourists with its imposing structure.
Another point of interest is the hamlet of Antuni, an ancient village located on a small peninsula in the lake, reached via a fragile isthmus. Antuni, a ghost town rediscovered after its accidental destruction during World War II, is now a fascinating place to explore. Among the recovered buildings is the 15th-century Dragon Palace, with its many rooms and as many as 365 windows, and the Hermitage of St. Savior, a scenic site that rises on a sheer wall above the lake.
